YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN HOW TO FISH

The Young Angler Initiative (YAI) brings young people together to learn how to fish from experienced members of the community in the Esk Valley. Not only do young anglers learn and improve their angling skills, each session provides an enjoyable social environment, helping to advance interpersonal social skills, a key opportunity for many young people of isolated rural communities.

2018 has been another successful season, and with support from a local business- Whitby Seafoods- seven young people have taken part in fortnightly fishing sessions throughout the summer, including two action packed sessions led by professional fisherman Olly Shepherd. The Young Anglers also attended fly tying and aquatic invertebrate identification sessions, building on their knowledge of these special places along the Esk.

We are lucky to have the on-going support of several volunteers who give their time freely to run the Young Angler Initiative fishing club. A big thank you to members of the Esk Fisheries Association for their support and to Whitby Seafoods who have kindly sponsored this important initiative.
